Places to visit in Barcelona : Sagrada Familia

Today we show you one of the beautiful places you have to visit in Barcelona!

The Sagrada familia, a famous basilica that began construction in 1882, is today one of the emblematic signs of the city of Barcelona.

Did you know that?

The origin of the name of this Catholic church comes from the Holy Family (the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph and Jesus, carved on the facade of the nativity). The term “Holy Family” is called “Sagrada Familia” in Spanish.

With nearly 3 million visitors each year, this basilica is listed as a World Heritage Site by Unesco. The construction of the Sagrada Familia will not be completed until 2026, to commemorate the centenary of the death of the famous architect Antoni Gaudí.

Antoni Gaudí imagined the Sagrada Familia with pure and simple geometric forms, so that any architect would be able to understand the plans and apply them in order to continue the construction of the Basilica after its disappearance. Being aware that he would not see the end of his work before his death, Gaudí wanted every generation of architect to bring his own style to the Sagrada Familia.

Antoni Gaudí wanted to represent the life of Jesus and the history of faith through this temple. The 18 towers are dedicated to important figures of the Bible:

  • 12 of them represent the apostles
  • 4 the evangelists
  • one the Virgin Mary
  • the highest of all Jesus Christ, who will be crowned by a cross 172 meters high.

When completed, the Sagrada Familia will be the tallest church in the world.

If you are passing through Barcelona, the The Happy Place Barcelona team encourages you to visit this unique place. The Sagrada Familia is the last construction of Gaudí, a true masterpiece built for more than a century
